How to Fix an Asus Laptop That Will Not Turn On
A dead Asus laptop is very often a drained or confused battery, not a failed motherboard. Try these in order before you book a repair.
Check the power
- Plug in the charger and look for the charging light on the side or front edge.
- Try a different wall socket, and check the lead is pushed fully into the charger brick.
- If the light is off, try another compatible Asus charger if you can borrow one.
When to stop: Call if the charger tip is hot or damaged, or the socket on the laptop is loose.
Do a power reset
- Unplug the charger and anything connected by USB.
- Hold the power button down for 40 seconds, then let go.
- On older models with a removable battery, take the battery out first, then hold the button.
- Plug the charger back in, wait a minute, and press the power button normally.
When to stop: Call if there is still no light and no sound.
It powers on but shows nothing
- Listen for the fan and look for the keyboard backlight.
- Shine a torch at the screen: a faint picture means the backlight has failed.
- Connect an external monitor or TV.
When to stop: Call in either case. See also our black screen guide.
Questions
Does holding the power button harm the laptop?
No. It clears leftover charge, which fixes a surprising number of “dead” laptops.
It will not turn on after a spill. What should I do?
Do not try again. Unplug it and call us: liquid damage gets worse with every attempt.
