How to Fix a Black Screen on an Asus Laptop
The laptop is on, the keyboard lights up, but the screen is black. Work through these before assuming the screen has failed.
Try the keys first
- Press the screen on/off key: on many Asus laptops this is Fn + F7.
- Press the brightness-up key several times.
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B together. The screen should flicker as the graphics driver restarts.
When to stop: If the picture returns, no repair is needed.
Test with another screen
- Connect an external monitor or TV with HDMI.
- Press Windows + P and choose Duplicate.
- If the picture is fine on the other screen, the laptop’s own display or its cable has failed.
- If both are black, the fault is more likely the graphics chip or the motherboard.
When to stop: Call in either case. Both are workshop repairs, and your files are safe.
Black screen after the Asus logo
- Hold the power button until the laptop turns off, then start it again.
- If it happens every time, start in Safe Mode: interrupt start-up three times and Windows opens its recovery menu.
- In Safe Mode, uninstall the most recent display driver or update.
When to stop: Call if it will not reach the recovery menu.
Questions
The screen is cracked but I can still see part of it. Is that the same fault?
No. A cracked panel needs replacing. See your range page for screen repair.
Is a black screen expensive to fix?
It depends which part has failed. We test it and quote before any work.
