The model number is on the label underneath the laptop, after the word MODEL. The letters that follow it, such as X1504ZA, identify the exact version.

What is inside a 2020 VivoBook
- CPU platforms: Intel 10th gen (Ice Lake on the S13 S333, Comet Lake on the S14 S433 / S15 S533) from CES 2020; AMD Ryzen 4000U arrived mid-2020 on the S14 M433, S15 M533 and Flip 14 TM420.
- E-series (E210 11.6-inch, E410 14-inch, E510 15.6-inch) uses Intel Pentium Silver / Celeron N-series chips with either 64-128GB eMMC or a 256-512GB PCIe SSD, so the first step in any data recovery is to check which of the two is fitted.
- On the E410, Asus lists RAM soldered to the board with no SO-DIMM slot, one M.2 2280 slot, and either a 33W 4.0mm barrel charger or a 45W USB-C charger depending on variant.
- Thin S-series models solder their memory: the S13 S333 has 8GB LPDDR4X that cannot be upgraded, but its M.2 SSD is replaceable; its USB-C port does not support Power Delivery. The Flip 14 TM420 also uses LPDDR4X and ships with a 45W USB-C charger.

Data recovery from a 2020 VivoBook
When one of these laptops will not start, the files are usually still there. Most VivoBooks store everything on an M.2 NVMe SSD, which we can take out and read directly when the laptop has failed. Budget E-series and Go models may instead have eMMC storage soldered to the board; with those, the data can only be reached by working on the board itself.
These laptops were sold with Windows 10, and many have since been upgraded to Windows 11, which can switch on device encryption by itself. If the drive is encrypted we need the BitLocker recovery key, which is normally saved in your Microsoft account.
